Zoe says: “I wrote this poem one night pretty much in one take, the words flowed…. I had too many verses, so had to chop half of it. I have always made a point of trying to stop and smile, say hi, and give at least a pound to every homeless person I walk past; there are just so many now, sometimes it’s just not possible… it is heart breaking, something has to be done.”
This song is available as a download single on iTunes with all proceeds going to the ‘Crisis’ charity. There is also a promo video on Youtube.
lyrics
Broken, I got no more tears
Broken, lost, all I got are my fears
I’ve lost all hope, my life’s disappeared
Somebody see me, somebody help me
Just a quid and a smile, would help me get by
Darkness, coldness and hunger
Empty promises and a cold shoulder
Oh what can I do, why should I try
Would be easier just to curl up and die
Just a quid and a smile, would help me get by
How do I know who to trust
Offering me a cup of tea and a crust
Endless days and nights of despair
People say they do, but they just don’t care
I’m lonely, I just can’t seem to get along
I’m trying, how did it all go so wrong
I reach out for help, they look away
I see their distain every single day
But just a quid and a smile, would help me get by
The Freedom of the wind ain’t what it’s cracked up to be
The cold tears my face, my matted hair is changing me
I was jumped on as I slept, all I got now are my coat and my shoes
No more self respect, nothing more left to loose
The only smile I got today was from a crisis volunteer
I used to have a plan and a solid career
All I get now is a jeer and a sneer
Please world don’t be so cavalier
Broken, I got no more tears
Gimme a Rabbit’s foot, and a bottle of beer
